Structure Of The Hair
A hair shaft is made up of lifeless protein material arranged around a central core. This outer protein layer is sheathed in delicate cuticle cells, which are arranged like shingles or tiles. The cuticle in turn is covered by a layer of fatty and protein substances that protect the hair.
Hair grows about half an inch a month. Some 100 new hairs are added daily: most hairs grow for 3-6 years before falling out.

Hair Porosity Test
To test hair porosity, use the float test by placing clean, product-free hair into a glass of room-temperature water for 2-4 minutes. Low porosity hair floats, medium sinks slowly, and high porosity sinks quickly. Alternatively, the slip 'n' slide test involves sliding fingers up a hair strand; smooth indicates low porosity, while bumpy indicates high porosity.
